Introduction:
The knife is made from alumina, which actually aluminium oxide. It is a chemical compound of aluminium and oxygen with the chemical formula Al2O3.
Alumina is a white powder that looks like table salt. It has a very high melting point, above 2050 °C, and is chemically a very stable compound. This is why we need to use so much energy to produce aluminium from alumina.
Alumina (Al2O3) is an excellent ceramic oxide with a very wide range of applications, including adsorbents, catalysts, microelectronics, chemicals, aerospace industry, and other high-technology fields.
The major uses of speciality aluminium oxides are in refractories, ceramics, polishing and abrasive applications. Large tonnages of aluminium hydroxide, from which alumina is derived, are used in the manufacture of zeolites, coating titania pigments, and as a fire retardant/smoke suppressant.
Aluminum oxide is an electrical insulator but has a relatively high thermal conductivity (30 Wm−1 K−1) for a ceramic material. Annual world production of alumina is approximately 45 million tons and over 90 percent of which is used in the manufacture of aluminum metal. The major uses of specialty aluminum oxides are in refractories, ceramics, and polishing and abrasive applications. Large tonnages are also used in the manufacture of zeolites, coating titanium pigments, and as a fire retardant/smoke suppressant.
Alumina ceramics are manufactured by different types of manufacturing processes including isotactic molding, injection molding, and extrusion. Precision grinding and lapping, laser machining, and other processes are among the finishing processes of this ceramics type. Alumina ceramics perform well when wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and strength are required at an economical price. They have high dielectric properties rendering them suitable for many electronic applications including electronic substrates and components of semiconductor processing equipment

Alumina possesses high ionic inter-atomic bonds leading to high chemical stability, thereby making it a good electrical insulator. It is extremely resistant to wear and corrosion and has a high mechanical strength.
